It’s true that automotive lock systems and keys are often more complicated devices than simple metal door keys. For example, you’ll find that most vehicles on the market today will contain a remote unlock function (a button on your car key to unlock your vehicle from afar). There is also the matter of your transponder…

What’s a transponder – do I have one in my car or truck?

Do you own a car built after 1997? You very well may, and probably do. You might already know that as per the Australian Government’s Australian Design Rules (ADR) legislation, all road vehicles built after this year should include a transponder security system (sometimes called a ‘chip key’). Automotive vehicles manufactured for sale in countries other than Australia are generally barred from import to Australia unless they are brought into compliance with our country’s ADRs.

A transponder is a module contained within your key, which is electronically controlled. It acts as an ‘immobiliser’ – meaning that it will not allow your vehicle to start without first verifying codes which are contained within your vehicle’s internal computer (as well as your key). Although an exact copy of your key may be able to physically turn the vehicle’s ignition, it will not allow the engine to start without the correct transponder coding.
